- Hundreds of volunteers from Belarus have joined a dedicated Belarusian battalion and other formations of Ukrainian armed forces fighting the Russian army, with more than 1,000 others still awaiting vetting and training, the Wall Street Journal reported. Meanwhile, Freedom for Russia, a second force staffed by Russian civilians, including former prisoners of war, is also ready to deploy to the front lines to fight against their countrymen.
- Ukraine called for additional Western weapons and stiffer sanctions against Moscow on Thursday, as the country braces against a redoubled Russian push in the east amid evidence of potential war crimes outside its capital of Kyiv, the Los Angeles Times reported. Meanwhile, The United Nations General Assembly voted Thursday to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council following high-profile allegations of war crimes perpetrated by Russian forces during the Ukraine war, according to CNN.
- The Czech parliament recognized the Ukrainian famine of the 1930s as a genocide, Radio Free Europe wrote. The Holodomor famine occurred in 1932-33, when Soviet leader Josef Stalin’s police forced peasants in Ukraine to join collective farms by seizing their grain and other foodstuffs.
- Hungary intends to pay for Russian gas in rubles, breaking with the European Union, which has attempted to present a united front in opposition to Moscow’s demand for payment in its currency, Reuters noted.
